Boiler replacement
A new boiler is sized to your house's heat loss, not to the one it replaces, and the quote lists every piece of the job.
Signs it's time
A leak at the bottom of the boiler body
Repairs more than once in a winter
More oil than your neighbors burn in a similar house
A boiler that's decades old and a tank that's due too
You're thinking about a heat pump and want to compare

At the visit
What happens when we come
- 01
Step 1: We walk the house
Radiators or baseboard, pipe sizes, zones, the chimney and the room the boiler sits in.
- 02
Step 2: We calculate the load
A room-by-room heat-loss calculation, so the boiler is sized to the house and not to a rule of thumb.
- 03
Step 3: You get a written quote
Equipment by model, chimney liner, controls, permit and removal, each on its own line. We show a heat pump alongside, if it fits your house.
- 04
Step 4: We install
The old boiler comes out, the new one is piped, wired and vented. The permit and the fire department's inspection are scheduled with you.
- 05
Step 5: We test and explain
Combustion read and written down, each zone checked, and the controls shown to you before we leave.
The number
What drives the cost
We don't print prices for work that depends on your house. These are the things that move the number, and you get it in writing before we start.
Size
Set by the heat-loss calculation, not by the old boiler's label.
Efficiency
A higher-efficiency boiler costs more and asks more of the venting.
Chimney liner and venting
A new boiler often needs the chimney relined; it is its own line.
Controls and zoning
Outdoor reset and better zone controls are options, not defaults.
Piping and the room
Old piping, the location and the access change the hours on the job.
Permit and removal
The permit, the fire department's inspection and taking the old boiler away.
Choices
Boiler or furnace, and what else
Most of our replacements are hot-water boilers feeding radiators or baseboard, and oil-fired warm-air furnaces. A heat pump is a third option, covered on its own page.
A new oil boiler
Right when you want the house heated the way it is now, with the least change.
A boiler plus a heat pump
Right when you want cooling and lower oil use, and the boiler to back up the coldest nights.
A heat pump alone
Right when the house suits it and you want the oil tank gone.
Questions we hear
How long does an install take?
A straightforward replacement is usually a day or two. Chimney liner work, old piping or a tight room can add to it, and the quote says which.
Will the heat be off while you work?
For part of the install, yes. In the heating season we plan the day so the house isn't cold overnight.
Do you pull the permit?
Yes. The permit and the fire department's inspection are on the quote.
Can I keep my old radiators?
Almost always. A new boiler feeds the same radiators or baseboard.
What about my oil tank?
If the tank is old, we say so in the quote and price the tank on its own line.
