Questions
What oil households ask us
Service
How often should an oil boiler be cleaned?
Once a year, before the heating season. If it has given trouble, a midwinter look is worth it.
What is checked at a cleaning?
Ten things, from the nozzle and filter to your carbon monoxide alarms. The list is on the plans page, and the report shows each one.
Do I need to be home?
Someone over eighteen needs to let us in and walk to the boiler with us.
Plans
Is a service plan insurance?
No. A plan is a yearly visit and a place in line when you call. Repairs, parts and oil are billed separately.
How do I cancel a plan?
Call or email before the renewal date in October and it ends with no fee.
No heat
What do I do if the carbon monoxide alarm sounds?
Leave the house and call 911 from outside. Call us once the fire department says it's safe.
My heat is out. What do I check first?
Carbon monoxide and fuel smell first, then the thermostat, the tank gauge, the emergency switch and one press of the reset button. The no-heat page has them in order.
Replacement
How long does a boiler replacement take?
Usually a day or two. The quote says what could add to it.
Can I keep my radiators with a new boiler?
Almost always. A new boiler feeds the same radiators or baseboard.
Tanks
Do you fill oil tanks?
No. We don't sell or deliver oil. We inspect tanks and replace them.
Heat pumps
Should I switch to a heat pump?
It depends on the boiler, the tank, the house and what you want. The page on when to switch sets out the choices.
Does a heat pump work in a Worcester winter?
Cold-climate models are made for it. We size one from your house's heat loss and say what backs it up.
